Guatemala: In Search of the World's Best Coffee

Guatemala is a country full of contrasts – from lush green highland landscapes and majestic volcanoes to bustling markets and colonial splendor. In January 2025, during the harvest season, my latest journey took me to two of the country’s most renowned coffee-growing regions: Huehuetenango and Antigua Guatemala. There, I had the opportunity to visit unique coffee farms and cooperatives, meet passionate farmers, and immerse myself in the world of Guatemalan coffee.

Huehuetenango – Coffee from the Highlands

My journey began in the Huehuetenango region, known for its high altitudes and exceptional microclimate. Here, coffee thrives under ideal conditions: cool nights, warm days, and mineral-rich soil create a complex flavor profile. I was particularly impressed by my visit to a Fair Trade and organic-certified cooperative, where I met inspiring female coffee farmers. These women have made a name for themselves in an industry traditionally dominated by men and produce some of the finest coffees I have ever tasted.

As I spoke with the farmers, I realized how much dedication and hard work goes into every bean. From meticulous cultivation and selective hand-picking to careful processing – nothing is left to chance. I was especially fascinated by the natural processing method, where coffee cherries dry slowly in the sun, intensifying their sweet, fruity notes.

Antigua Guatemala – Coffee Cultivation Among Volcanoes

After my time in Huehuetenango, I traveled to Antigua Guatemala – a city famous not only for its well-preserved colonial architecture but also for its world-class coffee. Amid this stunning backdrop, I visited El Tempixque, a farm nestled in the fertile volcanic landscape surrounding Antigua.

The combination of volcanic soil, optimal climate, and decades of farming expertise makes coffee from this region exceptional. During an extensive farm tour, I was able to witness the outstanding quality firsthand. The beans grown here are characterized by fine acidity, pleasant sweetness, and a velvety mouthfeel – a perfect balance that makes every sip an experience.

During the tasting, I encountered a variety of flavor notes: from chocolate and caramel to floral hints and a touch of red fruit – a true explosion for the palate. What impressed me the most was the deep-rooted knowledge of the farmers about their plants and processing techniques. Every step, from harvest to fermentation and roasting, was carried out with the utmost precision and passion.

Conclusion: Guatemala, a Paradise for Coffee Lovers

This journey once again showed me that there is so much more behind a cup of coffee than just a morning ritual. It’s the people, their stories, the unique terroirs, and the unwavering passion for quality that make Guatemalan coffee so special.

Huehuetenango and Antigua Guatemala not only offered me some of the best coffees I’ve ever had but also deep insights into sustainable farming methods and the unwavering commitment of local communities. Anyone who ever has the chance to visit Guatemala should take the time to explore one of the many coffee farms – it’s an experience you won’t forget anytime soon.
